I went to Iceland last year. I stayed three days in Reykjavik which I can highly recommend! I wouldn't stay longer, because there isn't that much to see. Then I rented a car and drove around the island, just not in the north-western part. It took 2 weeks to drive around and we mainly used the road number "1" and some highland roads of course. We stayed every night in another hotel and during the day we explored the country.
The golden circle is of course a must see, but just to be warned you can expect a lot of tourists. Some other highlights were the waterfalls, the black sand beach at vik, the glacier lake, whale watching in husavik and the delicious food!
It can be really useful to have a car with a 4x4 drive, otherwhise you want be allowed to take some highland roads. Also you can expect a loooot of sheeps, sometimes even on the road.
P.S don't stress yourself! Iceland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. If you can't make it to every single waterfall on the island, it's okay! You can always come back later and trust me the waterfall will still be there. And also don't have a busy schedule! Even driving can be beautiful, just imagine the scenery! And don't get confused if you are driving around the island, because the landscape changes a lot...just as the weather does!
If you are going to Iceland soon, I wish you a nice trip!

I just went this past October. First off rent a car, because driving the island is beautiful. If you stay for 3-4 days which is what i did. Explore the golden circle loop. (Several waterfalls, Blue lagoon, and the black sand beaches. But if you’re going for a week journey around the entire island.
Also download a solar flare app it will tell you prime times to see the northern lights. Hope this helps
